"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."- George Sanatanya

I've been thinking about the 'Now' as explained in various current books, how "now is all you have", and so on.  I also have the Past, in its richness and immensity, with its puzzles, lessons and layers, accessed by every sense, and most piercingly, by smell. The spice cookies I'm baking take me to my mother's kitchen; the scent of evergreen to the eight-foot Northern Spruce tree (always a gift to my father from a grateful patient). I'm suffused with memories, and also with interpretations, the stories I tell myself about our family. The past is not a prefect prism, it can bend and distort.

I bow humbly before the power of the past, in order to be more fully alive in the Now. I don't want to live solely in the Now, it would be as if a trunk packed with scraps of fabric, toys, jewels and old letters were lost.
