This Week's Affirmation is: I learn because my passion is understanding.

Through this affirmation, one will gain greater lasting knowledge from a life of boundless lessons. Too often I see students learning as a means to an end. They hold on to pieces of information long enough to pass exams, yet can recall very little after the semester has ended.

Knowledge is a virtue, and in itself a reward. Understanding can make what we learn so much more meaningful, and enhance our vision of the world around us.  The more fully we understand a topic, or the further we connect new concepts to additional knowledge, in turn the more pathways we form in our brain to recall those concepts.

This affirmation was inspired by a passage from a book I am currently studying. In the book Oil Painting Secrets From a Master, Linda Cateura advises, to read ". . . for understanding, which is alive and creative; not for acquiring information, which is static."

Boundless Lessons…in the Classroom….in Life.. ~~~

We are not going to be so enthused about every ‘class’ we take…nor learn from every ‘life experience’….though, it would be rather nice if we did!…if we held onto All the information we are ‘taught’ and learn it..beyond Exams….

It is hard to gauge what anyone really ‘learns’ in Life experience…in the classroom…I remember my days as an undergrad…there were a few courses (several...hahaha) that I was merely memorizing information…to get through and pass…move onward…some of those ‘requirements’ that at the time, I found no interest in…

On my Hike today, I was pondering ‘education’…as I have taught in the classroom (elementary-high school) and I will teach in higher education in the years to come…and, I thought about ‘what would have inspired me most in the classroom? Even those courses I am not that ‘interested’ in….

and I realized…truly…a Great Teacher…becomes the Best Student….when I was a substitute teacher, I remember going into elementary classrooms and looking at the ‘agenda’ for the day thinking "shite!" I don’t remember how to write a perfect cursive capital G, or the history of our Constitution etc….

SO, when the students arrived, I would give them a few minutes to review what we were to work on for the day….and then, I would ask “who would like to come up and show the class how to write a capital G in cursive? While encouraging them to be ‘the teacher’…."who would like to teach the class about the history of the Constitution?”…if needed, I would give the class some more time to research…..it worked Beautifully! I learned too! (HA!)

In Higher Ed, “EGO” tends to get in the way…ARGH!!

Mathematics…Yes, I have ‘Math Anxiety’…rooted from YEARS of not gaining the ‘lasting knowledge’ nor having the opportunity to apply it…I even have a book called ‘Overcoming Your Math Anxiety”…hahahahahaha….

Thank You for this Affirmation…
