Esalen memories and photographs

6
loves

My husband just bought a new fax machine which also has a scanner built in.  This has motivated me to scan into our computer some of my old photographs.  I thought perhaps other Esalen people would be interested in seeing some of them as they show a number of our friends from when we were living at Esalen from 1988 to 1990.

 I'll try a few now and see how it looks. If anyone would care to comment I'd like to hear...and of course we'd love to hear from anyone shown in the photos too.  I haven't done this before and have tried to make the images smaller but I'm rather stuck on 2nd one.  I'll have to update later if I can. Here are a few of the garden/farm crew both my husband and I (long before we were married) were in back then.

The first shows some of us out at the farm early in the morning before work started. Shown are Denise, Uwe, Barbara &  me.

  This second picture shows the day our garden crew cooked for everyone in the lodge.  All survived our culinary attempts that day.

.........In the picture are Petja, me, Maiken,Jill,  Bela, Thomas, Joe and Denise.

Sorry..I can't figure out how to make the 2nd picture smaller at this time.

Hi Briget,

Sorry for not posting sooner. It is great fun to see your photos. I especially like the Hot Spring Farm photo above and the staff week shot.

When Bruce Neeb and I started the farm we had to clear a bunch of junk from one part of the land. I found the old sign that had been at the top of the hill before the Esalen sign was made. The two part sign said Hot Springs Lodge.  I carve off the "Lodge" part and carved the word "Farm" trying to keep the same font style. I then built the bench with the sign. Last I checked the bottom part had rotted away and the bench was gone or moved.

Warm regards

how great to see these photos Briget!  some of these folks were there when i was cooking in the kitchen, a couple of years before you were there.  Seeing Denise reminded me of how much i liked her, AND David.  David kindly came here, to the Eastern Shore of VA, 3 or 4 years ago to help us build a sweat lodge and to lead the "christening" sweat.  would LOVE to see any other photos you have, if you're willing to post.

thanks again.

The menu on the wall, the smiles and sun-drenched faces of the group are really inspirational.  Thanks for sharing.  I hope for more pics soon too!!

Hi Steve;

 I was away on a trip and just came by tonight and saw this photo post of mine got some comments made since I posted it....I was glad to see one was from you.  I'll have to get some of the photos I have of you at Esalen over the years scanned and post some here later.  I recall there is a funny one of you and me on the beach where we are both posing like wet cormorants with arms outstretched that was taken one of the times I was back at Esalen in the late 1990's.

Thanks for telling  me/us about the history of the Hot Springs Farm sign.  That was interesting to me to know and I showed it to Joe too who was also interested as he had been a tent scholar out there on the farm for 6 months.

Take care;

Bridget

Glad you liked the photos Dorothy & Kristy.  Thanks for letting me know.

And thanks for telling me a bit about something that happened to David since I last saw him (which was one of the visits I made to Esalen in the 10 years after I left there....we lived in southern Oregon then so Big Sur was a lot closer than it's been for me since).  The major reason I'm posting these photos here is so maybe we can hear more from or about people who we knew and haven't been in touch with for a decade or more.

BTW Dorothy, were you at Esalen at all in 1988-1990 (or even in late 1987 as I think that was when I took my first 10 day workshop at Esalen)...because I do recall I believe a cook named Dorthy that I had a few brief encounters with in the kitchen when I was through there (although I never was on the kitchen crew I did do community hours or other things in the kitchen at times).

Regards to you both;

Bridget
