300 ft redwood, 1500 years old...The Grandfathers, and Tree Houses

6
loves

here is the article:  http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/redwoods/gatefold-image

My dream is to someday live in a tree house -- (not a kid's one but an adult, real house in a tree, with electricity, plumbing, etc).  And NOT one nailed to a tree, but rather hung with cables so as not to hurt the tree.  They have such things, (you can have them built). I've researched it.  I would love to have a real tree house (home) up in the very top of something as magnificent as this beautiful Redwood!

I would live just a quiet, simple life, reading Annie Dillard and Henry David Thoreau.  I would care for the tree and all of the neighboring trees.  I would create some type of pulley system to haul Tundra up and down.

Ahhh... dreams.

Wonderful. Honoring the Grandfathers.

thnx Antje Blue

  Totally Committed

I give thanks for unknown blessings already on the way

Oh, and I just remembered -- my tree house will look something like this:

or this:

Only way up HIGH in a tree, and suspended by cables so as not to impact the health of the tree(s).

Also, I will grow my own food in containers, on the decks of the tree house.  I will need to drive into town occasionally in order to stock up on Tundra's food, as he is not ready for a vegetarian diet.

Just my fantasy. I've always loved trees.  Not just to climb, or to live in, but mainly because they are so beautiful.

Wow, I gotta explore this soon.

Rob G – December 24, 2009 – 10:21pm

I don't have them handy right now, but there are a several sites listing actual professional builders of real (grownup) tree houses.  Just google it, and/or I will try to look them up and post them here within the next few days.

You could build your own, but these professionals know how to hang them with cables so as not to harm the tree nor it's growth, and they know all about running the plumbing, electric, etc.

Yes, I will definitely post some links for you within the next few days.

Friends of mine have stayed in some.  (One of my friends lived in a forest in a self made low level treehouse for 5 years allegedly  in Albion til Monsanto burned his treehouse down).

I find it ironic (?) that many of the tree dwellings I've seen online have wood-burning fireplaces in them.

I hope that such a fireplace is not what caused your friend's tree house to burn down.  Anyway, how sad that it burned.

Here are just a few links to tree house builders, and photos:

http://www.thelivingtreehouse.com/custom_treehouses.php     These guys seem to build nation-wide, not just in Pennsylvania.  You get a slide show if you click on one of the pictures at the top of the page.

http://www.thetoyzone.com/2009/blog/20-awe-inspiring-tree-houses/  Photos, etc of 20 tree houses.  Some are a bit strange-looking.  And some are really cool.  I would prefer mine to be quite high in the tree, as opposed to just ten or twenty feet off the ground.

 http://www.oddee.com/item_96470.aspx  Photos, descriptions.

And a video, nice tree house.  Again, I would personally prefer it to be at least twenty feet higher...

I used to have more links, but when I reinstalled my OS I lost many of them.  Anyway, this is probably plenty (enough!) to post here. :)

Oh!

Maybe I misread or misunderstood your comment above, Rob.

What is "Monsanto" ?  I hate to flaunt my ignorance, but something tells me that I may have misunderstood...

... is Monsanto a company?  Agriculture?

Here's a link: Millions against Monsanto  http://www.organicconsumers.org/monlink.cfm

I think I know, now, what you were saying.

Oh, how ignorant can I be?!?  Now, after seeing the video from above link, I do remember...  ...I just didn't recognize the name Monsanto.

Why did they burn it down, Rob?  Can you tell me more?

it was their forest and he wasn't allowed to live there...

though he lived lightly (they didn't have to do it).

His wasn't so elegant as those in your pictures.  Just back from Seattle...more late if I can think of anything.  Happy New Year.  All is well.

This is AH-MAZING!!

Jasmine M – January 31, 2010 – 1:42pm

How ARE you?!  I've missed you here.

As far as the tree houses, they're really cool, and I still wish to build one (or have one built) some day, and live in it.

As far as Monsanto, I am so embarrassed that I did not recognize the name sooner.  Rob G pointed it out.

In retrospect, I do faintly recall watching some documentary on Monsanto, some time ago, but I guess that I just put it in my can't do anything about this right now memory file, and forgot about it.  Shame on me!  :)

But back to the subject.  Wouldn't it be oh so cool to live in a real tree house/home?!?

Glad that you enjoyed it.

Welcome back.

I'm doing great, Zen! Working on my last semester as an Undergrad and getting ready for a backpacking trip through Europe this summer.

The tree is gorgeous!! Do you have any idea where is was taken? I would love to live in a tree house as well. With internet and running water of course. lol

There was a documentary on Monsanto actually, it's called The Future of Food. Very good and eyeopening about the food we eat. I highly recommend you watch it if you haven't already :-)

How is everything with you?

Love,
Jasmine

Jasmine M – January 31, 2010 – 4:48pm

 Jasmine,

Yes!  That is the one that I watched, some time ago.  A friend sent had us a copy, and it is now in our storage.  I do remember that it was very good.  I guess that I need to watch it again.

I am doing quite well, thank you.   Congratulations on being nearly done with your Undergrad degree!  I'm sorry, but I don't recall your major (?) .  And how exciting for you -- a backpacking trip through Europe!!!

I will look up the locations of the tree houses in this post, if I can, and post them here for you.  They are awesome, aren't they?

Happy Groundhog Day,

-- ZP
