If you are experiencing technical difficulties on the site (like "Page Not Found" or finding you can't sign in to the Meditation House, or the Media Player not loading, and the like... you are not alone.
I think the website is going through abandonement issues as Albert settles in his new home. With appropriate workshops and therapy the condition should be resolved at some point when Albert's computer catches up to his physical body and his new home.
Just goes to show how dependent we are on the skills and attention that Albert gives to the site. In the meantime, I guess we can be grateful for what we do have. Thanks Albert for all your efforts!
Since PHP is a server-side scripting language I'm willing to bet the "Page Not Found" problem is on the service provider side and may be related to the current hacking of mega-sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Since the iThou databases are on the service provider side, it may also explain why it's sometimes difficult to login, logout and join the Meditation House and why larger sound (mp3) files may, at times, be incomplete or slower to play.
I can never say "thank you" to Albert enough times for giving us this site. (And being tolerant with us)
And even though I am posting much less than I used to do (still feeing strong caution) - I check the site a lot.
When it was going through such woes yesterday, I attributed it to the denial of services that were overwhelming Twitter, Facebook, and attacking (but not overwhelming) Google yesterday. Do we "blame" the Iranian govt as some suggested? Or the Russians, as another source suggested? - Both due to "politics" and trying to knock out the opponents' propaganda and communications on Twitter.
But that is the "logical" explanation. I like Steve's better. Abandonment issues; and workshops and therapy required. Maybe a good sageing of the new place. Maybe a few hours at the Baths. A dance or two or three to the magical and earthy blues sounds of the Hot Springs Band.
Certainly much love being sent to iThou and to Albert in new circumstances.
Thanks for bringing this up, Steve.

how hard is it for one's personal computer to be hacked? and then, is it contagious? i do have "security" and i am clueless
You can pick up a virus (in a "cookie", etc.) anytime you visit a poorly secured website or open an email attachment (usually from an unrecognized sender). System updates downloaded from Microsoft and Apple routinely have security patches.
For most users these viruses, spyware, etc. just slow your system down a bit. If you have sensitive documents you might want to store them to an external USB or Firewire hard-drive and only connect the drive when you need those documents.
You can purchase software utilities to clean your system. However, unless you really know the software and your system you can very easily corrupt your data or, less likely, render your system inoperable.
If your system just doesn't seem to be running right, it might be a good idea to hire a trusted computer repair person to clean your system (after they've completely backed up your system).
part two of my question is, if i log into iThou or anywhere, do my cooties come with me?
The odds of getting a virus are significantly reduced if you use a Mac - although now with Microsoft products being used on Macs, that is not as hard and fast a rule as it used to be.
These days, there is no such thing as perfect safety from viruses on any web site - even bank and credit card company sites have been hacked and tainted (not to mention some significant govt sites).
And as to cooties. Are they viral cooties?

i trust i'm harmless, and a careful iThouist
I was afraid to post on here. Then I said to myself. Why should I run. Even at the risk of saying the wrong thing. However, if I run from here and am afraid of certain people. I will run from everything.
Yes, thanks for your patience as I try and sort through all of this with Steve Brown of Holistic Solutions [hotdrupal.com]. They upgraded their PHP and Apache server versions and it may have thrown our site for a bit of a loop. We're trying to track down the issue now.
And thanks for all your well wishes and support.
If you can list the specific details of what appears to have gotten broken in the last week or so, feel free to let me know either by private message or on this thread.
Blessings,
Albert
tried to sign in 3 times 3rd time worked
tried to post to meditation area 3rd try it worked (use to be two tries)
page not there error message several times today at first try
Still having difficulties with many "Page Not Found" appearances... being persistent (trying two, three, or four times) seems to work. Meditation House: not always able to sign in and the Media Player not willing to cooperate, although multiple attempts can get a positive result... sometimes.
This isn't Al, it's steve @ HotDrupal
The site has been moved to a different server still running PHP 5.2.9 and not 5.2.10
Let's see if it is more stable here
Drupal... PHP... The ghost in the machine is revealed at last! Thanks Steve...
Albert & Steven,
Note that the "Karma Point Counter" that controls the grid/array on the "People" page has been reset. Otherwise, a "normal" session.
Thank you, Steven.
Thanks to all of you who have been working to fix these troubles.
It is a pleasure to be able to listen to the Meditation player once more.
And to use all the other features here.
Blessings to you,
scarlet

i'm ahead of Albert and may pass mr. Steven with this post! new server rocks!
As in the rest of my life, all my good karma is going for nought.
just joking.
And watching Henry pull ahead of us. Thank goodness this isn't a race or contest. (Henry, did you secretly tank this web site so you could pull ahead? No, of course not. LOL)

henry's leapfrog moment in esalen and iThou history. thanks to our new server
Thanks so much to Steve Brown of Holistic Solutions! Everything seems much better now, hip hip hooray, and the meditation house is back in working order. (We'll check on the karma counter, too, to make sure all your good karma is remembered :-) ) Steve from Holistic Solutions [hotdrupal.com] has been doing all the work behind the scenes... way above and beyond... so thanks so much... and hats off to Steve!
Thank you very much, Steve! Your expertise and generosity are much appreciated!

Now, I'm wondering, has anyone seen our good mr. Harper since this morning in the Meditation House... Henry? Come to think of it I haven't seen Prof. John since the Earth suffered that shower of meteorites. Henry?!!
Steve Brown, I LOVE you! Thanks for rescuing our site.
And Henry don't worry--- even if karma counter goes back on, we'll know you are still at the head of the pack (well, right behind Albert and Steven Harper, of course.)
I would go meditate in the Meditation House right now, except I leave in 5 mintues to go meditate elswhere == with a pack of meditators (or is it a herd of meditators? flock of meditators? Well, definitely a room full of meditators.).

Thank you to the other Steve.
Albert,
How can we (who are able and want to) help you with some of the costs of maintaining iThou? I'm very happy to click on the "PayPal" button...
Please, let us help.
Love,
Michael
I believe that the correct term is "A gaggle of meditators".

It's nice to see you!
Warmly,

In case it is not clear, Steve Brown of Holistice Solution/Hot Dupal along with Albert, was the one that fixed the site issues. This level of computer programing is way beyond my skill set.
Michael, thanks for wanting to contribute and support the site financially. Back at the beginning of this year (2009) we had a lively discussion about this and then made an experiment using a site/tool called ChipIn. Here is a link to the summary of how the experiment went: http://www.ithou.org/node/4623
I imagine that we will try this as an anual event; January for February of 2010.
I am happy to have the Meditation House "Found" again. Thanks for all the effort that go into making this experiment work.
or as Henry might say, "Yay Steve, Al and Steven"!
You all have done so much, and thank you.
Three cheers! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!

Guessing the glitches are on the service provider side
