Andy Murray fought his way into the quarter-finals at Wimbledon today. he is a survivor of the 1996 Dunblane massacre. Queen Liz has promised to be there if he makes the finals, and Scotland may declare independence if he wins. Go Andy

To overcome the sort of tragedy he witnessed. It had to be one of the saddest days worldwide March 13th 1996.

I had not consciously thought of it and now this evening I came across your posting and hope all the families are somehow getting through -coping as best they can this many years later.

adding to the drama is that no UK(British?) male has won Wimbledon since Fred Perry 73 years ago. Above the entrance to stadium court there is an inscription from Kipling: "if you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those twin imposters just the same"

there was an"informal" esalen sports center in the early "70s.  i defer to better minds. i think i remember mike spino wearing an ESALEN SPORTS CENTER t-shirt. Williams sisters in the women's final, and andy vs. andy tomorrow to face Federer historic Sunday

henry glenn – July 2, 2009 – 5:41pm

gallant scot Andy Murray lost to american Andy Roddick at Wimbledon today. Never in my ancient observational career have i seen such national pressure on an individual athlete. Murray is young and should have several more chances. tour de france starts tomorrow

henry glenn – July 3, 2009 – 11:33am

Michael – July 3, 2009 – 11:52am

of the tour de france leaves barcelona tomorrow and climbs into the pyrenees for the first decisive mountain stage of this years race. hang on to your passports. my maiden voyage to esalen in '74 was on a bicycle

henry glenn – July 9, 2009 – 3:35pm

Thank you.

Inspiring, indeed.

So useful to be reminded of the good side of life, in spite of the tragedies that most of us experience at some point. Although few of us experience tragedy at that level. But many of us do experience events that require courage and focus to move on from.

What an example this young one is.

You said "my maiden voyage to Esalan in '74 was on a bicycle".  From where did you ride? How far?

Plays well with others

i promise to tell the story pretty soon. i worry i've already posted it and Albert's gonna put me back on probation again :-) (my first smiley)

henry glenn – July 11, 2009 – 1:56pm

no clue what i was in for hopping on my bicycle in carmel valley one beautiful sunday morning in 1974, headed for esalen.  my bike and me had flown out(airplane) from W.VA. and i was registered for "experience of esalen" week with janet zuckerman.  i was completely unprepared for topping out at nepenthe on a gorgeous pacific day. those of you that have driven the road from carmel can imagine what its like on the seat of a bicycle. At the gate, i was greeted by the blond wildman (help me John C or mr. Steven) and checked in. I then collapsed euphoric on the lawn. There were two golden naked nordic aliens at the pool with their two beautiful golden nordic alien children. the only other person on the lawn picked up his guitar and played "country roads take me home".

henry glenn – July 12, 2009 – 10:14am

the tour de france climbs into the swiss alps early tomorrow in a decisive 15th stage. the aerial videography(helicopter) should be spectacular if the weather is good. 37 year old cancer survivor Lance Armstrong battles for his eighth "maillot jaune"....also spectacular is tomorrow's final round of the British Open at Turnberry, "the pebble beach of scotland". 59 year old Tom Watson is leaping off the pages of mMurphy's "golf in the Kingdom" to be the unprecedented 3rd round leader....finally, stay tuned in february for the AT&T pro-am golf from pebble beach. Magnificent aerial blimp images of the Santa Lucia mountains, the monterey penninsula and whales migrating to (from?) Big Sur

henry glenn – July 18, 2009 – 12:35pm

To the G-S team manager who had his boys ride Hincapie off the yellow by five seconds, I hope that you need some help climbing in the Alps and that you turn to Big George and he just sort of smiles.

To all you non-riders--sorry, I couldn't help it.  And this is the closest you will ever see me to being really angry.  I only get really angry at things that don't matter very much.  The other events I great with classic buddhist stoicism.  (Is there such a thing?)

The Tour today goes with 40 miles of where I went to school.  Go Alberto!  Go Lance!

I gotta say that these riders really are amazing.  I'm riding a lot these days, and it really teaches you about suffering.

three stages left on the tour. Big Mont Ventoux stage saturday and then the beautiful ceremonial ride into paris sunday. we're racing for a place on the podium

henry glenn – July 23, 2009 – 1:28pm

Yeah, Contador ruled the TT today.  But I'm a bit disappointed in him.  He's obviously the best, but yesterday he attacked the Schleck brothers with no apparent useful gain possible, and all he succeeded in doing was dropping his own team mate, Kloeden.  Had he not done that, it would have been possible for the first time to have three from one team (Astana) on the podium:  Contador, Armstrong, Kloeden.  That would have been a first.  Nevertheless, I still don't think there would have been a way to keep Andy Schleck away.

Jeeessshhhh.  Those guys can ride.  I rode at their pace yesterday, for about ten minutes, and then popped.  Had to call my mommy to drive me home!!

henry glenn – July 26, 2009 – 11:40am

I can almost do three miles without falling over now.

I've got an advantage though.  Lance is now a local Aspen boy.

homesick pilgrims might enjoy the spectacular television coverage of the u.s open at pebble beach this weekend on espn/nbc. Glorious aerial images from the metlife blimp of the pacific, carmel bay, monterey penninsula and the santa lucia mountains south to big sur. There are rumors of "Shivas sightings" near the Clffs of Doom

henry glenn – June 17, 2010 – 4:38pm

This thread has been going for nearly a year now.  It's enjoyable to read back over it to the beginning.

Rock on, henry!

homesick pilgrim,

Weems mentioned that Lance Armstrong might call him to participate in this years tour de france with team radio shack. Look for him in the peloton until they hit the mountains. Also, don't be surprised to see Rafa Nadal show up on the pitch for Spain in sunday's world cup final

my Bluefield Orioles(baby birds) play their final game ever tonight at Bowen Field( the House my Grandfather built). Their minor league affiliation with parent club Baltimore is the longest in baseball. Alumni include Boog Powell, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken.... Say it ain't so
