I am so blissed that I am starting the Esalen massage 28 day course next week! Since the longest I've ever been at Esalen before is for a 5 day workshop, does anyone have any suggestions for my month there? Things like maybe a nearby day hike (not too advanced but good views) for Sundays' off? Or anyone want me to say "Hi" to anybody already living there?
I can't wait for a month of peace and quiet and meditation and yoga and soaking!!!
Esalen hiking big sur I will be there May 31st for week with Perry and Johanna. There is Louis Packard state park. massageyou have a gift of enthusiasm. have a great month
Your month will pass more quickly than you can imagine. The area is full of great hikes and views (not to mention Nepenthe for a good burger).
the massage training will be great! such talented bodworkers and teachers there on the massage crew. wonderful for you. And such friends you will make among the other students. Friends that can last a lifetime. Good for you!

Hope you have a wonderful time.
I like to escape to Fernwood, a local bar with Internet access, even when only at Esalen for 5 days. I love Nepenthe but Fernwood is much cheaper:-) I also like the Spirit Garden up North. I think it's where the gas station is. I lost track but I think I have been to Esalen about 200 times but never for longer than a weekend, a week and another weekend. I admire anyone who can tolerate more than that as I personally would go crazy unless I had a regular escape. One tip: Take ear plugs. An Esalen friend of mine who has been to Esalen numerous times and for long periods of time, ended up sleeping in a car for weeks because she had a snoring roommate. And as Anjela pointed out, contact Steve and see what hikes he recommends. I might run into you as I will be at Esalen the week after next for a day.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I'm hoping I'll stay busy w/the workshop itself, only Friday afternoons and Sundays free, but I will definately be trying to fit in some hikes. Fernwood sounds fun too. And also another friend told me about the Big Sur River Inn on Sundays, live music w/ chairs set up in the river. Anyone heard anything about that?

I happen to love Post Ranch Inn but you can always stop by and on the deck they do a Starry Starry Night on
Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9:00 - 10:00 p.m.
On clear nights an amateur astronomer will give a glimpse of planets, stars, nebulas, and much more. Weather permitting. It is a nice romantic touch and is free!
Howdy. How did I miss this. The one place I stop without fail whenever in Big Sur. I always get the salad though it hasn't been as good last few times..I want my walnuts sugary (with that vinegrette dressing). Feet in the stream is close to heaven on earth.
I really love Big Sur. Esalen would never work anywhere else:-)

ever!
Would love to hear if you managed any free time to explore the surrounding areas?
Anjela
a few weeks ago. Are you home by now?
were you in the work scholar month with will J? please give us a blissful report
weekend trip! He probably won't remember me (wink) Were you there Henry this past month?
it has been 429 moons since i was in big sur and i love esalen more than ever thanks in part to iThou. wishing everyone a blissful June
Hi Jenny! yes, sadly, i am back in the real world. got back yesterday afternoon but am already thinking about a personal retreat day (or two) back at Esalen next week. How are you?
Hi Anjela! Despite so many great suggestions I didn't leave the property except for a couple trips to Big Sur (the town) for ATM/cash and one drive to take a friend to Monterey Airport. I just didn't have any desire to leave the grounds. I was happy to just experience being there w/ movement classes, baths, meals, my massage stuff, and being w/ new friends. Yeah...
Will, it sounds like you had a wonderful and full Esalen experience. A month really isn't enough time, is it.
I couldn't have imagined wanting to be away from it the first month I was there. And SUCH friends one makes there.
Maybe next time you can stay longer.
Welcome back to the other reality.
