After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Natalia Rae has passed away today.
I will always remember her as a light. As one who always supported the underdog. As a dear friend.
For those of you who knew her and loved her, there will be a ceremony for her at her home in Larkspur for the next couple of days. Chris Price has been organizing this and I am taking the liberty, with her permission, of reprinting her letter here:
From Chris Price:
July 21, 2008
Dear Friends of Natalia,
Today Natalia spread her wings and flew from her sweet body into the big
mystery we call death. Although the medical tests at the end of last week
clarified that her death was imminent, none of us was quite prepared for her
to find her way through this as quickly as she did. Silly us. We all know
that if you offered Nat an adventure, she was ready to go! Having settled
deep inside several hours before, at noon today she went, attended by loving
friends and family.
She was able to die at home as she preferred and, following her wishes, her
body is at her house until Wednesday (July 23 at dawn). We invite you to
come, say goodbye and sit together in the love, light and gratitude she
cultivated so faithfully these last years.
Between midnight and dawn, tonight and tomorrow night, we will have a quiet
vigil at the house. The main rooms and the deck will be dedicated to
meditation, chanting, sitting with her body, and other quiet forms of
blessing her in her journey now. Waves and whispers of emotion that may
arise are always welcome.
Between dawn and midnight tomorrow, you are also welcome to come for
communing, story telling, singing, laughing, crying and eating in her honor
(bring something you love to eat).
Starting now, you can come in at any time, leave whenever, come and go.
Just remember that between midnight and dawn on both nights will be for
quiet practice and rest.
Two days ago, Nat said that rather than bouquets, she wanted people to bring
one flower that was really crazy or that they really loved. You can fulfill
her desire if you like. We¹ll supply the vases. There is an altar. Feel free
to bring something to add to that also.
At dawn on Wednesday morning we will give Natalia¹s body her last walk down
the boardwalk. Gather here by 5:30AM if you want to make that journey with
her. We need several sets of sure feet, strong arms and sweet voices.

FROM SOUTH
101N to Lucky Dr. Exit (just before Sir Francis Drake exit). Turn Rt - go
to first stoplight at Wornum. Turn right and go under bridge (which is 101)
to the end. At the light turn Rt on Tamal Vista. At the end of Tamal Vista
turn left on Fifer. At end of Fifer turn LEFT on Lucky Dr. -
At end of Lucky turn Rt on Doherty. Go about a mile. Start slowing down -
you'll be passing the police station on your right. Next Hall Middle School
will be on your right. Just past the school there is a driveway with a
streetsign that says BOARDWALK ONE. There is an obvious bright crosswalk
sign right behind the street sign. The crosswalk is painted in the road
just AFTER the driveway. If you see Larkspur Plaza Drive or Magnolia Ave
you've gone too far. You may find yourself in the school driveway - that
means you turned too soon - just look around and you will see the Boardwalk
One street sign.
The boardwalk is at the NW corner of the parking lot. Stay on the main
boardwalk (DON'T turn left when you have the option to do so). I'm number
33. . . a light gray square house - the 4th from the far end. There are
white xmas lights going to my house. Enjoy the walk - it takes about 4 or 5
minutes.
FROM NORTH
Take 101 South. You will exit on Lucky/Doherty Dr. - just after Sir
Francis Drake exit. Go straight off the exit (street is actually Fifer). Go
straight through the traffic light (DO NOT TURN LEFT ON TAMAL VISTA AT THE
LIGHT) to the end of the street - turn left on Lucky Dr.
At end of Lucky turn Rt on Doherty (signs to downtown Larkspur). Go about a
mile. Start slowing down - you'll be passing the police station. See Hall
Middle School on your right. Just past the school there is a driveway with
a streetsign that says BOARDWALK ONE. There is a crosswalk painted in the
road just AFTER the driveway. If you see Larkspur Plaza Drive or Magnolia
Ave you've gone too far. there is a chainlink fence between my driveway and
the exit to the school where there is a new constructed building and bike
racks
Turn down the driveway (which looks like a one-way street) and park in the
big lot. Walk down the boardwalk to #33 - Do not turn left when you have a
chance about 1/2 way - just go straight. My house is the 4th house from the
far end. It is a grey square box with planters in front.
FROM THE EAST BAY
After the bridge take the Sir Francis Drake/101 South exit. Wind around
Larkspur Landing and under 101 - be in left lane and merge onto 101 South.
Stay in RIGHT LANE. You will exit on Lucky/Doherty Dr. - the very first
exit. Go straight off the exit (street is actually Fifer). Go straight
through the traffic light (DO NOT TURN LEFT ON TAMAL VISTA AT THE LIGHT) to
the end of the street - turn left on Lucky Dr.
You may find yourself in the school driveway -
that means you turned too soon - just look around and you will see the
Boardwalk One street sign. . . My driveway is right there - there is a
chainlink fence between my driveway and the school driveway (which says DO
NOT ENTER)
She amazed me each time I saw her, in my mind's eye, in our virtual space. She will live with all of us, I know, in courage and in spirit and, most of all, in kindness and loving shared. Each good deed will honor Natalia Rae's life and the blessed way she shared it.
Sitting with you...for you...
I have been inspired and awed by Natalia's postings of her journey. By her incandescent spirit and by her loving circle of friends. By her simultaneous engagement and surrender, by the gatherings, pets, laughter, body art, meals, songs and spirits she chose to surround herself with, through the years. Sitting with you...
the most amazing inspiration of LIVING toward DEATH i've ever known. i loved her. i will miss her.
BLESSINGS DEAR NATALIA. i hope to 'hang' with you again one day.
LOVE. PEACE.
was astonished by how much she could tolerate and how heroic she was in being a pioneer for those who come after her. How much medical science 'imposes' on people in the name of healing in light of the impossible. I have learned so much from her blogs.
I am happy that she now gets to rest in peace.
No words... only feelings...
We had a reunion the weekend of April 12/13, which happened to be the same weekend as Esalen Open Gate and Ronnie Hare's memorial. Around 10 of us had breakfast at Deetjen's on the Sunday morning and Natalia was with us, so full of optimism and Hutzpa. I hugged her goodbye and had a strong feeling that that would be the last time I would see her. Though her mind was bright, her body felt so tired under our hug.. I found her courage hugely inspiring and found myself wondering whether I would be able to do what she was doing in the face of similar challenges. It is comforting to read Chris Price's letter and sense the peacefulness and honoring with which she died. May she find peace. May we all find peace in our lives the way she seemed to, and without a crisis of the magnitude she had to face - that is the real learning in life I feel.
