Esalen - Big Sur Party 1968

Terrific pic. The bass headstock in the center really makes it in my opinion.

See you tomorrow night! Bring wine...

Great Shot. I think I have a pic of the same scene in my archive. Thanks for posting.

I tried to figure out how old you were and came to the conclusion that you were 13 or so. What do you remember about 1968?

I was a freshman in high school. My friend Dennis drove a limo, not professionally, he just drove a limo. I lived 10 miles south of The City, San Francisco. We used to go to concerts in the park, Fillmore West and Winterland. We hitch hiked wherever we needed to go or piled two deep into a car someone would happen to have, shopped at the Army/Navy surplus store (bell bottom blues), wore hip-huggers and leather was big. Leather belts, handbags, hair clips. We smoked pot constantly, and gathered around conga drums, bongos and folk guitars...black lights were in...hobbits were happening...Records were $3.50 or so in the Record Store where big bins of record albums were displayed, just like you see in the movies or like CD's are now. We met people in public places and called them 'friend'. We wore headbands. Fringes were cool. We didn't trust anyone over 21. That's it in a nutshell. I know there is more. Those are my immediate impressions...patchouli was everywhere. Everyone had a roach clip. We got to wear flowers in our hair (figuratively)...It was the revolution of enlightenment. We tripped a lot. Acid was easy to get and cleeeeean. Pot was sold in lids and was cheap-$10 an ounce...Seeds 'n Stems...the beat goes on, Monika. Thanks for asking. Who remembers Red Mountain Wine? Annie Greensprings?

Kristy Bliss – October 30, 2007 – 7:15pm

now

Monika, I've been through some doozies (of a quake); Had not heard of the quake...have to come to I-thou to get the news. Just checked out info at wikipedia on Esalen.

Esalen Big Sur party looks like it was fun I almost woke up in 1968 (at a World Science Fiction convention in St. Louis -- first time on a plane and seeing many great fantasy and SF artists and their work in person...yep I awoke in an Art Show room...everything got really bright).

Then I went back to sleep... :)
