The Snake Lady

2
loves

i was a 'Fortune Teller' at a Halloween party last night for a whole bunch of kids. it was a cool party. it was in a dark chunk of woods, no electricity, and with a burn ban due to drought only candles and a small fire in a BBQ grill. it was a great atmosphere.

there is an old 'dead' small motor-home in there that i set up as a fortune telling place. the kids loved it. each kid got 'smudged with sage smoke' as they walked in the door and told about how Native Americans had used this ritual for eons to cleanse their "auras" and what an "aura" is (energy field around the body - good and bad vibes, etc.) [now remember, this isn't California! these kids had never heard of most of what they got in this short experience! haha]

when they entered the trailer they sat across from me - i was "The Snake Lady" and had snakes all around, tons of candles, fabrics & fake cobwebs everywhere, and one of those 'fog' machines going.

i starting by asking each of them if they knew how to 'quiet their mind' - to stop thinking - - - - only 2 said sometimes. so i told them i would teach them how to quiet their mind and said for them to keep eye contact with me as i rang the Tibetan bell and then we would practice together the stilling of our minds by taking a deep breath, holding it 2 or 3 full seconds, breathing out, holding it, breathing in, holding it, etc. and had them notice that when they were holding their breath their mind was quiet - that it is impossible to think (unless you MAKE yourself think one word at a time) when you are holding your breath. (but should only hold for a couple seconds -no longer).

after 'the practice', i proceeded to tell them (always in a big-eyed, snake-lady way haha) that they could practice this when they got upset, or couldn't go to sleep at night, or were stressed before a test, or were upset that a sweetheart broke their heart, etc. i also told them that if they could learn to quiet their mind they would be able to follow their own inner - wiser self (their 'intuitive self') instead of just their mind and that they would be able to have a more meaningful life that way.

then i had them pick one tarot card and turn it upside down in front of me. i would then look at the little 'meaning book' and say (whether their card was reversed or not) that there were TWO meanings to their card and the meaning for THEM depended on whether they chose to follow the LIGHT or follow the DARK, and that i hoped they would choose to follow the LIGHT. i'd read them all the possibilities and say that they would come to many forks in the road during their life and it was up to them which path they took and that by learning to still their mind they could find a better guide for which path to take. it was surprising that these kids 8 to 16 would just stare at me with big eyes and be so serious and sincerely enjoy this the whole thing. many of them asked if they could come back a second time. haha

anyway, because they go to a christian private school i didn't want any parents to come track me down and hang me so i had each of them ALSO pick a card out of a bowl of bible-verse cards that i inherited from my grandmother. i had them read their card aloud to me. it was amazing how fitting those verses were as well.

anyway, i used one of those funny looking 'wire' head tinglers [http://www.bodytimewellness.com/tingler/] and tingled their heads before they left (they all LOVED that! haha) and told them to notice how when their heads were being tingled they ALSO did not think anything and that was because they were totally in the moment instead of their heads.

they were lined up for over 3 hours non-stop. it was great fun!!!

You've got to adopt this look.  It is stunning on you.  No joke, D.  Go dark and wild woman!

Kristy Bliss – October 21, 2007 – 9:37am

I agree, this should be permanent, maybe except for the blood:-)

That could go too. Dorothy is quite the vixen with raven locks, eh?  Maybe I'll do that with my hair...I love the purple.

Kristy Bliss – October 21, 2007 – 2:36pm

You should offer a workshop at Esalen and do the same thing!

I my early twenties:-)

I never have had purple hair, at least that I can remember. One day I will go blonde though, just to try it. I've always said I can't do it until both of my parents have passed away because no matter how old they are (and my dad died two and a half years ago) and no matter how old I am, they would kill me if I dyed my hair blonde.

I think it would be fun.

The last time I had my hair colored I asked for golds and purples-Autumn colors. Instead my hairdresser went with reds and coppers which is nice (Kathleen's definition of nice...nice without pizazz). Now I'm trying to hook up with my old hairdresser. Even though he did my hair in his kitchen in a cloud of smoke, I got some righteous color...At some point his kitchen was not appropriate for my kids anymore so I took a hiatus and found someone else to do my hair. I'm ready to go back now, smoke or not. Nobody does color like Kristopher.

I think there is hardly any color that I didn't have on my hair... from blonde to black including purple, orange, blue and green. I am now set on Aveda, which is all natural so not as many choices as I'd like too. Mindy, life is short, just reinvent yourself or try a naval piercing or a tatoo first:-) but then don't take your mother to Esalen with you.

Got that.  Will do the blonde thing a little later in life.  Fortunately, there's time.  I can appreciate the spirit of what you are saying...I especially like the reinvention concept.

You are one gorgeous witchy woman....

Did you put this outfit and makeup together Dorothy?

yep

i sat one night and ordered it all (in pieces) off the Spencer's new Halloween website.  then just went for it.  it was fun!

thanks all for the comments!  it's been so long since i've been to esalen that i think next time i go i'll start out incognito (i'll leave off the purple wig and just go dark brown with big sunglasses, etc.!) i'd love to attempt experiencing esalen anew again, without stopping every 2 seconds to greet someone i know (even though i LOVE that part too - - - - yet this way i can hopefully have BOTH!) haha

Esalen Halloween parties are OUTRAGEOUS!  many of the costumes are incrediblly creative.  i've spent a few there.
i have to tell y'all about mine one year - i have a photo somewhere and will post when i find it.
it was the year of the clinton/lewinski scandal and i went as monica lewinsky.  i had on a blue dress with stains on it (i taped littled signs that said 'Stain' with an arrow, along with a beret on my head.
i then strapped a big dildo on my chest in such a way that i could bend my head down and suck on it hahahaha  i had a picture of bill clinton glued on the dildo as well.
in the pocket of my dress i had a box of cigars that said 'Presidential'.
and last, but not least, i had a squirt bottle of this stuff called 'Liquid Silk', which is a fabulous sex lube.  it looks like, and is the consistency of, semen.  i had a sign on the bottle that read:  'Billy's Cum - Yum Yum' and ran around squirting people with it.
pretty wild for someone whose chosen to be celibate for 11 years!  haha
i know it might sound awful to some of you but it was nothing compared to what some others came up with.  we let our dark sides flourish on halloween at esalen!  some of you more local folks ought to go check it out!  it's like a mini-burning man!
Dorothy T – October 22, 2007 – 6:36pm

Do you have a picture of that Halloween?

Thanks for the story. This just made my day!

i have some photos (hard copies) but i can't remember if i got others beside myself.  won't promise when, but i'll attempt to find and post.  thanks monika!

Dorothy T – October 22, 2007 – 7:10pm

I went as a satyr one halloween and no one at that particular party would speak to me...haha...They just didn't get it. I was 20.

I enjoy your willingness to reinvent yourself Dorothy...very cool.  You make a gorgeous brunette...perhaps you are a gorgeous brunette...Any way you want to cut it, live large!
