I was surprised to discover this brief comment by H.H. the Dalai Lama, related to the practice of Phowa. This meditation practice is not widely known yet, perhaps because it is so closely identified with Tibetan Buddhism. Yet, as meditiation has become progressively more secular, this valuable practice is beginning to be used in the West. The meditation can be done with any religious dicipline in mind. Joan Halifax has recorded excellent instructions for Phowa that appear at the end of her extraordinary audio program called, "Being With Dying." I have included a generalized Phowa-like practice, with a decidedly Gestaltist twist, at the end of the Meditation Practices in this group.
